Unsurprisingly, I stepped across another comic/satirical map of Europe, on a map tumblr website, and I decided to comment and translate the map. Even though I have not got a very vast knowledge of European History, a lot of what I know is due to History of Cartography. A lot could be learnt with maps and the story behind each map.
This one is not an exception, the illustrator, Paul Hadol, born and raised in France, created this piece and once again it portrays the social tensions at the moment.
It was written in the legend England, isolated, with rage almost forgetting Ireland was tight with a leash. Spain smoked and it’s leaning on Portugal. France pushes away the Prussian invasions that have one hand over Holland and other hand over Austria. Italy also says to Bismarck, Otto put the feet away from here*. Corsica and Sardinia… a true Gavroche that laughs at everything**. Denmark that lost its feet in Holstein*** hopes to take back. European Turkey wakes up and yawns. Asian Turkey smokes its hookah. Sweden made leaps like a panther. And Russia, a bogeyman that wants to fill its hood”.
* Otto von Bismark, a german/Prussian was a politian kwown as Prussian Napoleon, erected the Second Reich. Was the first emperor of German after several wars and after the unificiation of german. Born in 1815 and died 1898
**Gavroche, a character from Les Miserable written by Victor Hugo was known to run and to pick up the munitions in the trenches. Then it was immortalized in French catch phrase meaning urchin or street child
*** Holstein is a county in North Germany between the Elba River and Eider River.
There is, still, two points that I want to focus on: In Italy where it is said “Otto put the feet away from here” this could be translated into a “friendship” at that time between Italy and France due to the Prussian Invasions, both nations were wanted by the Prussian army and at that time felt in the same situation. The fact that Hadol treated the Emperor of Prussia by his first name it is also a sign of contempt and weakness showing that The French were strong enough to deal with them.
The awakening of the Ottoman Empire in the European Region is also a focus point, because of the modernization. But soon to be over…
